Flashback Friday: Mary J. Blige and Coolio

Happy Friday!

I mean, it’s EVERY Friday a happy Friday? No one ever says “Happy Wednesday!”

These classic tracks will give you a reason to keep this Friday joyous.

Mary J. Blige, Mary (1999)

Yesterday was a big day for the queen – not only did she celebrate a birthday, she received a LONG overdue star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Add on her great turn in the recent film “Mudbound” and MJB continues to shine. Over in The Soul In Stereo Cypher (our awesome Facebook group that you’d be crazy not to be part of) we had a great convo about the legacy of the Mary album. It was a completely different sound for Mary – and the industry – at the time, but it worked. The lesson is clear – taking chances only strengthens your legacy.

Coolio, Gangsta’s Paradise (1995)

Look playa, laugh all you want but give Coolio the props he deserves. He was a force in the mid-90s and while he was often written off as a “party rapper,” he could be a pretty skilled lyricist when he wanted to be. His second album is easily his best work, crammed with memorable songs that defined the era.
