Guilty Pleasures: Young M.A., “OOOUUU”

We all have guilty pleasures, those songs that have no business on our iPods or the tracks we only blast with the windows rolled all the way up in our rides. In this column we share our darkest musical secrets.

12 Savage

Kodak Black

Lil Uzi Vert

Lil Yachty

Your little cousin’s favorite rappers are HORRIBLE.

Seriously, 2016’s new batch of rookies are THE hottest of garbage.

With one exception.

Young M.A., the most noteworthy newcomer of them all, is actually pretty OK. Her single “OOOUUU,” is unquestionably the biggest song on the streets right now.

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Despite what 50-‘leven think pieces floating around may tell you, “OOOUUU” is far from a hip-hop masterpiece. It’s not even that great – it’s nearly a carbon copy of Bobby Shmurda’s two-year old hit filled with lazy couplets that rhyme “Stephanie” with “Head-phanie.” But what Young M.A. has over her horrid peers is an undeniable presence on the microphone. She commands the track and pulls you in with her delivery. She’s got the X-factor, and that often goes much further than picture-perfect metaphors.

So yeah, I’ll admit “OOOUUU” isn’t the greatest song on my playlist. But Lord knows it goes hard.
