Flashback Friday: Pebbles and En Vogue
So as many of you know, the wifey and I recently purchased our first home. Yay to home ownership. BOO to property taxes. Y’all conveniently left that part out when sharing the joys of having a house.
Anyway, with a new home comes a new cable provider, and I just realized the we have VH1 Soul! I’m sure most of you reading this have been watching that channel for years, but our past providers were too stingy to carry it.
Here are some familiar faces that popped up during my first VH1 Soul viewing.
Pebbles (1987)
Poor Pebbles was demonized in that TLC biopic a couple of years back but you can’t deny her track record. “Girlfriend” was a banger — the type of upbeat 80s R&B that has influenced modern production. It still sounds fresh today.

I’m admittedly not the biggest En Vogue fan, mostly because they were SO overexposed in the early 90s. But I had forgotten about “Give It Up To Turn It Loose,” which sounds a lot better 20 years after it was played endlessly. I guess absence does make the heart grow fonder.

Tony! Toni! Tone! Sons of Soul. One of the best albums ever recorded. I remember being a kid when it came out and ordering it from Columbia House on the 20 Cd’s for $1 deal. One of the few albums you can let ride from start to finish! Perfect CD to pop in to clean the house or hit the road! Standout tracks: Ex-Girlfriend, Leavin, I Couldn’t Keep it to Myself.
