Flashback Friday: Anthony Hamilton and Kendrick Lamar

We’re heading into Labor Day weekend! I’m going to be working through the holiday though – pour out a lil’ for the homie who couldn’t be there to celebrate with y’all.

But that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy old favorites right now.

Longtime Soul In Stereo readers remember our girl Desireé Savage. She’s back with a banger.

Anthony Hamilton, Comin’ From Where I’m From (2003)

Desireé said: “This debut from Anthony Hamilton is full of soul and raw emotion. Cuts like “Since I Seen’t You” will have you making that Cosby Kendrick verse meme stank face, while “I’m a Mess” will make you want to call Anthony’s ex on his behalf!”

Edward remembers Kendrick before the hype.

Kendrick Lamar, Section.80 (2011)

Edd said: “Back in 2011 or so, my boys were determined to make me a fan of this young guy from the West Coast named Kendrick Lamar. I remember listening to his Overly Dedicated mixtape and thinking, “yeah, this is good but it’s not blowing me away.” That changed in the summer of 2011 when K. Dot dropped Section.80 – that’s when I became a full-fledged Kendrick stan. The concepts, content and of course lyrical ability put this guy into a league of his own. If you only know Kendrick from good kid, m.A.A.d city, I implore you to check out his early work. You’ll become an even bigger fan.”
