GeorgiaMae’s Top Christmas Songs

The holidays are truly upon us. Y’all wanna know my favorite part of the Christmas season? It certainly isn’t standing in line for 30 minutes at Wal-Mart or wracking my brain trying to come up with Christmas gifts for my parents (they always say, “oh, I don’t know, get me anything…”).

Nope, it’s Christmas music! It just doesn’t feel like the holidays until I hear that Darth Vader-sounding dude from the Temptations tell us that “not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.”

Here at GeorgiaMae, we’re compiling a list of the best holiday songs. And we need your help!

Here’s all you need to do – share your three top Christmas songs (with No. 1 being your absolute favorite song) either by leaving them in the comments section of this post, on the wall of the Georgia Mae Facebook group page (You are a member, right? If not, do a quick search for GeorgiaMae on My Mind) or for you shy folks, e-mail your top three picks to javacia@soulinstereo.com or edward@soulinstereo.com.

On December 23, the day my brother and I designated as Christmas Eve-Eve, we’ll reveal the top 5 songs GeorgiaMae readers jam to each Christmas. We might even do a Top 10 or 15, depending on how many entries we receive.

So tell yo momma and yo momma’s momma to stop by and share their favorites.

To get the ball rolling, here are my three favorites:

3. Boyz II Men and Brian McKnight, “Let It Snow”

Ah, back when R&B groups knew how to sing. One thing bothers me, though – why does Brian start his verse with “COME OOOOOOVER HERE! And help me trim the tree?” Maybe those rumors about his anger issues are true. Or he’s secretly Scorpion from Mortal Kombat.

2. Patti LaBelle, “T’was Love”

Whenever the wifey sees me with my Patti LaBelle Christmas album, she runs and ducks for cover. That’s because I’m going to mimic every screeching note Patti hits. And playa, she doesn’t hold back on this one.

Yeah, this song is awfully pitiful, but it’s one of my favorite songs ever, not just among the holidays.

Your turn. Let us know your favorites.

  1. I heart Jesus, so I’m pretty ashamed to say that my favorite Christmas songs have nothing to do with the true reason for the season, but here goes…

    3. “Merry Christmas, Baby,” Otis Redding

    2. “White Christmas” — also by Otis Redding (What can I say? I love me some Otis.)

    1. “Back Door Santa,” Clarence Carter

“Back Door Santa” is quite possibly the most inappropriate Christmas song ever written. It’s about a guy who sneaks into the houses of married women to have sex with them when their husbands aren’t home. But I hadn’t figured that out yet when I was dancing around to it as a little girl and it’s still my absolute favorite.

  2. Hey, Javacia! Here are my favorites:
    1. “White Christmas”
    2. “The First Noel”
    3. “O Little Town of Bethlehem”

  3. 1. Boyz II Men–Silent Night (best rendition EVER, IMO)

    2. This Christmas–Donny Hathaway (again best ever, but then again he’s my fav singer of all time)

    3. I also vote for Let It Snow!!

Honorable mention, I think it’s called ‘I’ve Got My Love to Keep Me Warm,’–I could be wrong, but if you’ve seen the latest Sears commercial, you know what I’m talking about and you can’t go Christmas shopping w/o hearing it =)

  4. Love Jesus as I do, Christmas might be my least favorite Holiday. Until this post, I forgot that there are Christmas songs I actually like!

I had to look up “Back Door Santa.” You’re right: it is highly inappropriate. But like most inappropriate material, it’s also humorous and catchy.
    1. “Merry Christmas, Baby,” The O’Jays’ remake
    2. “(It Must’ve Been Ol’) Santa Claus,” Harry Connick, Jr.
    3. “Now Behold The Lamb,” Kirk Franklin & The Family

The whole Harry Connick, Jr. Christmas album deserves an honorable mention.

  5. My favorites:
    1. Silent Night, Temptations
    2. Let It Snow, BoyzIIMen & B. Mcknight
    3. Everything For Christmas, Temptations
    4. Every Year, Every Christmas, Luther Vandross
    5. Silver Bells, Take 6
    6. What a Wonderful World, Ledisi (not really Christmas, but it’s on her Christmas album…it works!!!)

  6. 3.Gee Whiz its Christmas by Carla Thomas
    2. This Christmas by Donny Hathaway (his version only; nobody elses can hold a candle!!)
1.Christmas in the city by Mary J. Blige
Honorable mention: Santa Claus go str8 2 the ghetto by James Brown & Christmas just aint Christmas by The OJays

    D. Savage

  7. My top five Christmas tunes are:

    1. This Christmas — Donny Hathaway.

    2. Give Love On Christmas Day — Jackson 5

    3. The Christmas Song — Nat King Cole

    4. Every Year, Every Christmas — Luther Vandross. (I remember when Edd told me it was the most depressing Christmas song he has ever heard.)

    5. Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas — Jackson 5

  8. I love “Gee Whiz It’s Christmas” but it sounds like she’s stalking the guy in the song.

And I thought everyone knew about freaky Clarence Carter and “Back Door Santa.”

    Keep ’em coming!

  9. 1. “All I Want for Christmas is You” Mariah Carey (How has no one said this yet???)

    2. “River” Robert Downey Jr. and Vonda Shepherd version

    3. “Santa Baby” Calista Flockhart version.

yeah, yeah… I watched a lot of tv as a kid. (shocking)

  10. “Let It Snow,” certainly has the lead. Many of you all mentioned it and someone just sent me a Facebook message casting a vote for that jam.

  11. Here are my 3!
    3. I don’t know the song’s official title but it goes….”Gee Whiz, It’s Christmas!”
    2. All I Want for Christmas is You!
    Mariah Carey
    1. Let it Snow
    Boys II Men
