Love Letters: Signs of a Perfect Angel

Love Letters is back with a truckload of questions from the lovelorn. If you’ve submitted a question, never fear. I’ll answer each and every one in time. And if you’d like to join the discussion, here’s how:

Send your inquiries to edward@soulinstereo.com, or find me on twitter @etbowser. Just provide your initials, or a fun nickname.

Here’s today’s question:

My pastor says you have to ask God for the one He wants for you and that you then should ask for a sign that he/she was sent for you. My question is how do you know what the sign is or what if the person is already in your life but God wants you to wait?

Today, I transform from Keith Sweat lovin’, venom-spewing Edd to youth Bible study leader Mr. Edward.

Now that I think about it, there’s not much difference.

Anyway, first, I hate to discredit your pastor but I was always taught that you never ask God for a sign. Sure there were tons of signs in the Bible, but this is a different age. God wants us leaning more on faith and studying the word than looking for flaming bushes to get specific direction.

If relying on a sign is out of the question, how do you find the man God wants for you? Easy – you simply have to learn what God considers a godly man:

1 Corinthians 15:58 — “Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.”

According to this, if your man isn’t stable, focused, humble and God-fearing, don’t even write me to ask why your man is acting up – the dude isn’t godly.

Keeping those attributes in mind while you’re looking for the perfect mate will save you a lot of trouble (and keep my inbox drama-free). Studying and learning what God wants for you essentially prepares you for your mate. Getting a sign from above is like a cheat sheet – there’s no learning or self-discovery involved.

So stop looking for neon billboards from the heavens. Learn for yourself what a true godly man is and your eyes will be opened. The person you’ve been looking for may have been right there all along.
