4 Reasons I’m Glad to Go Back to School

Though summer isn’t officially over until September 23, for me the season is already coming to a close. I’m a teacher and on Monday morning it’s back to school for me. But, believe it or not, I’m not sad about this. And here’s why:

1. My expanding waistline. Even though I’ve been a fitness freak over the past two months – running/walking 6 miles most days of the week and going to intense spin classes – I have gained weight. I could say that it’s because I’ve gained so much muscle, but I highly doubt that’s it. The weight, I’m sure, is more Mexican food than muscle mass. You see, summer is the only time I get to have adult lunches, you know, the kind where you go out to nice restaurants and sit down and chat for an hour instead of scarfing down a Lean Cuisine in 15 minutes so you can hurry up and pee and make copies before your next class. So I went on A LOT of lunch dates this summer and you can be sure I wasn’t ordering salads. Plus, the few times I was home most of the day, I spent those hours snacking, and not on celery sticks.

2. My diminishing bank account. While the number on the scale was going up, the one on my bank statement was going down. All those lunches add up.

3. The true test of passion. This summer I pursued my passion for writing and building community like never before through blogging and freelancing and through my work with See Jane Write, Birmingham Natural Beauties and the Alabama Social Media Association. But now that I’m returning to the daily grind, my passion will be put to the test. Will I be able to balance it all? I sure hope so, and once I figure out how to do it I plan to blog about it.

4. I miss my kiddos. Yes, I admit it. Just don’t tell them I said so.
