Flashback Friday: Lauryn Hill and The Tony Rich Project

Happy Friday! What chu’ listening to?

Georgia Mae reader Kimberly Jackson shares a classic:

Lauryn Hill, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill (1998)

Kim said she can’t get enough of Lauryn’s debut album because “it’s full of life lessons about women.” No argument there – every track is a testament to a woman’s struggle with love and self-identity. The album has gone on to become one of the most critically acclaimed works in the past 15 years. Heck, I remember in 1999, they played every single track on the radio, regularly.

And most telling of all, last spring the Georgia Mae audience voted Lauryn the greatest female rapper of all time, mostly off the strength of this album. You can’t beat that endorsement.

The Tony Rich Project, Words (1995)

I was a somewhat melancholy girl in high school and something tell me this CD is partly to blame. Words by The Tony Rich Project features “Nobody Knows,” probably one of the saddest love songs ever written and a few other tracks that might leave a sensitive teenage girl in tears. But this album isn’t all doom and gloom. “Like a Woman” is a pretty sexy track and Words will always be a favorite because it was so different from other releases of the mid-90s and honestly I haven’t seen anything like it since.

  2. Man, I HATED Tony Rich in the 90s. I thought he was dull and boring and his album title was stupid. “Nobody Knows” still puts me in a coma.

But maybe I’ll check out the album. My mature ears might give it a chance.

  3. Two hot albums. Will be rockin’ all the OLD Ms. Hill tunes. Nowadays she’s a HOT mess. She may be a little off now, but one can’t deny her talent!
