Flashback Friday: The Best Man Soundtrack and The Flipmode Squad

There’s nothing like celebrating Friday with good music. What are you listening to?

Javacia shares this one:

The Best Man Soundtrack (1999)

Jai said: I bought this album before I’d heard a single track and even before I’d even seen the movie. Why? Because I looked on the back and saw “Poetry Girl” by Eric Benet. I loved Eric Benet and I loved poetry so I figured I’d have to love this song. Despite my horrible logic, the song did not disappoint and neither did the rest of the soundtrack, boasting selections from Maxwell, Faith Evans, Allure and other R&B stars who made 90s music so great.

Here’s what Edward is rocking:

Flipmode Squad, The Imperial (1998)

Last week I rediscovered this album from Busta Rhymes’ group of manic rappers while perusing my CD collection. Besides their single “Cha Cha Cha,” which resides on my iPod, I couldn’t remember a thing about it. I assume it was just lost in the shuffle of 1998, when classic albums were being released left and right.

I gave The Imperial another listen and was shocked at how much I enjoyed it. Most rap crews these days have two or three decent members and a bunch of window dressing (I’m looking at you, Young Money). It was very refreshing to hear six diverse artists hold their own and go nuts over melancholy beats. Check out the album if you can – it holds up very well.
