Lady Sings the Blues

Progressive Soul Mondays will return next week.

But to help with your Monday music fix, here are two albums from 2009 I’ll be rocking throughout 2010 and that I suggest you snag ASAP, if you haven’t already:

The Fall, Norah Jones

Jones serves up her signature mellow melodies in this release but spices things up by adding a heaping of sass and a dash of rock to her beautiful blues. The Fall is one of those albums I love more each time I listen to it and it’ll be on repeat today as I toil away in my classroom during teacher work day.

Colour Me Free, Joss Stone

I’m a huge Joss Stone fan, but even I will admit her albums can get a bit monotonous. With Colour Me Free, however, Stone delivers her trademark retro-soul sound with a modern twist. She hits us, for example, with an unexpected feature by Nas that helps keep things fresh. Stone also seems more mature on her fourth release, like she’s actually experienced the ups and downs of love she’s wailing about in her songs. This connection to the lyrics makes for a great album of sophisticated soul.
