Edd’s MANtra: Did He or Didn’t He?

I think I missed the memo but last week must have been designated as National Sex Scandal Week. Most of y’all were obsessed with Tigergate so you might have missed an even more disturbing story involving R&B’s Pleasure P.

Around Wednesday, word began to spread online that about five years ago Pleasure P was accused of molesting children, including his 3 and 4-year-old niece and nephew, which led him to be dismissed from his duties as lead singer of the R&B group Pretty Ricky. The daughter of Pleasure P’s lawyer starting fanning the flames on Twitter, saying that she began speaking out when P got behind on his lawyer bills. Pretty Ricky has been speaking volumes by saying nothing – they said they can’t comment because Pleasure P’s lawyer filed an injunction against them but they keep reiterating that THEY forced him out of the group. Pleasure P, of course, denies everything.

Well, then.

Although this went down almost a week ago and had the Internet Goin’ Nutz like Paul Wall, I’ve refrained from comment. Why? Cuz I’m just not sold on this thing. Here’s why:

– As I mentioned above, Pleasure P allegedly did all this horrible stuff back in 2004. That’s the same year Pretty Ricky debuted with that hideous “Grind On Me” song. The group’s album was released the next year and the follow-up album dropped in 2007. Pleasure P wasn’t “kicked out” of the group until the next year. So did they not learn about these allegations until 2008? Or did they not care? Hmmm.

– Nearly immediately after getting kicked out, Pleasure P went solo as part of the Bluestar label that falls under Atlantic Records. Wanna know who runs Bluestar? Pretty Ricky. If Pleasure P was evil incarnate, why would they allow him to record solo as part of their label? Yes, I know it puts money in their pockets, but if the allegations ever got out, wouldn’t their label also have a black eye? Hmmmm.

– Word of this drama spread thanks to the daughter of Pleasure P’s lawyer. What self-respecting lawyer would let his ghetto daughter put his clients’ business out in the street? I bet she’s the type of girl who likes dudes like this:

Hmmmmm. Not sure I trust those Pretty Ricky fans.

– Thanks to my well-connected wifey I know there is a TON of behind-the-scenes beef between Pleasure P and Pretty Ricky. They absolutely HATE each other. Maybe it’s because Pretty Ricky has struggled since Pleasure P left. They hired and fired some poor soul named 4Play (sigh), and he was replaced by a grown man named Lingerie (ugh!). Their 2008 album was shelved and their newest album, coincidentally released just a few weeks ago, debuted at No. 97 on the charts. Ouch. Their last album with Pleasure P debuted at No. 1.

Oh, did I mention that Pleasure P was nominated for two Grammys THE SAME DAY these allegations broke? Hmmmmmm.

Now, don’t get me wrong. I ain’t saying Pleasure P is innocent. By the time this is posted, P might pull a Tiger and admit to “family transgressions.” But until then, I’m not trusting the word of some girl on Twitter and men named after draws.
