Flashback Friday: Gerald Levert and Jean Grae

Another Friday, another flashback! Here’s what we’ve got for this week.

Gerald Levert, Private Line (1991)

Earlier this week in the Soul in Stereo Cypher we celebrated what would have been Gerald’s 53rd birthday and LAWD I’m still not over this man’s death. I guarantee that if he was still with us he’d still be delivering incredible music. His solo debut, from way back in 1991, still stands the test of time and set him on the road to stardom.

Did you catch last week’s Twitter outrage? Jermaine Dupri complained about the overabundance of “stripper rappers” in hip-hop today and everyone LOST THEIR MINDS. While I understand JD’s point, I wasn’t cool with the generalization. Mainstream radio might be 98% twerking but there are many, many dope female MCs out there. One of my faves is Jean Grae – her collabo with 9th Wonder might be my favorite project from her. Instead of throwing stones at JD, y’all need to be out here supporting talented women like Jean.
