Flashback Friday: Dionne Warwick and Nina Sky

Did y’all have a long week? Cuz your boy had a long week. I’m ready to fall into the weekend’s loving embrace.

Let’s ride out the week with these two old faves.

Dionne Warwick, Heartbreaker (1982)

Whew, Dionne got Twitter all kinda twisted earlier this week after stating that she didn’t think this generation of musicians had what it took to be icons. And one thing I will NOT let these children do it slander the greatness of Dionne, especially when she was just STATING HER OPINION. Her career spans over a half a century (!), has sold 75 million singles and has countless platinum and gold success. With that kind of resume, yes, she can speak on what it makes an icon. Her 1982 album is probably the work I’ve sat with the most, and decades later it still doesn’t disappoint.

Nina Sky (2004)

The sisters of Nina Sky seemed to disappear as quickly as they arrived in the mid ’00s, despite having several albums under their belt. I consider them pretty underrated – as their debut album proved, they had no problem cranking out club bangers. If you were on the scene in circa 2005, their music was the soundtrack to night life.

  1. Move Ya Body still bangs. I wish Nina Sky lasted longer in the mainstream.
