Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, The Message (1982)

It’s not too often that a song remains relevant more than 30 years after its release, but “The Message” manages to do just that. Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five helped establish the hip-hop template with turntablism and break-beat DJ’ing. Not only were they pioneers, they were prophets. It’s why their social message remains strong today.

Rah Digga, Dirty Harriett (1999)

Playa, are y’all really still out here debating the merits (or lack thereof) of Iggy Azalea and Nicki Minaj? Let me turn up the volume slightly louder on Dirty Harriett and drown drown out the nonsense. Digga Digga (birth name Rashia) is one of the most skilled female MCs of all time, PERIOD. Her ’99 debut didn’t get the love it deserved, so go revisit it. And get off that Igloo Australia stuff, please.
