Guilty Pleasures: The Archies, “Sugar, Sugar”

We all have guilty pleasures, those songs that have no business on our iPods or the tracks we only blast with the windows up. In this column we share our darkest musical secrets.

Today’s guilty pleasure track comes from Buddy Roberts of The Cobalt Club. Here’s Buddy coming clean:

“I have several guilty song pleasures, actually, but the first one that came to mind is “Sugar, Sugar” by The Archies.

“The song made its debut on the Saturday morning cartoon based on the long-running comic book antics of Archie, Jughead, Reggie, Betty, and Veronica.  The textbook definition of bubblegum pop, it later spent a month at the top of the Billboard 100.

“Maybe it’s simply the nostalgia factor — it’s certainly not because it’s a good example of cerebral songwriting — but this tune often finds itself on my playlists.”
