Listen Up: Mic Militia, “Marching”

This is a very historic year for Birmingham. Down here in the Magic City, we’re celebrating 50 years since the pivotal year 1963 – the year that was a true turning point in the civil-rights movement. That year triggered a movement that revamped our nation and captivated the world.

Decades later, it does my heart good to see genuine artists who are still carrying the torch. Mic Militia is one of those artists.

Mic currently resides in Montgomery, Ala., but his heart is still in Birmingham. His music is inspired by the tales of the homeless, specifically war veterans. “Some of these homeless folks fought for us to have this freedom and simple luxuries,” he said. “I feel like the pioneers or any artist who are trying to preserve and protect Hip Hop music, are not shown any appreciation. We are like those veterans.”

Mic is showing his forefathers respect by echoing their message in his music. His latest album, Will Rap 4 Food, brings the gospel of the streets to the masses. Don’t get it confused, these aren’t overblown stores of million-dollar drug deals and endless bottle-popping. With a cadence reminiscent of Slim Thug and the grounded sincerity of Scarface, Mic touches on issues like poverty, education and social justice. You know, REAL street issues.

Check out Mic’s video for “Marching” below, an ode to the civil-rights movement. It’s proof that rap still can touch lives.
