25 Songs of Christmas: Kurtis Blow, Christmas Rappin’

Here at Soul In Stereo, we’re counting down to Christmas by featuring our favorite holiday tracks. Here’s today’s Christmas classic:

Ready for a little hip-hop history? Kurtis’ Blow’s “Christmas Rappin'” was the first major hip-hop record to be released. A revolution began in 1979, all thanks to Kurtis Blow.

In recent years, Kurtis has come under fire from jaded fans who complain that his music was too simplistic. That’s like calling the Wright brothers failures because they didn’t invent the space shuttle. Kurtis paved the way for every single rapper that followed over the next 30 years.

And it all started with a Christmas song.
