On the Run

Last week I contemplated replacing my weight loss goals with fitness goals and I’ve decided to do just that. The scale has been placed under the bed and I’m now going to focus on how much my body can do instead of how much it weighs, taking note of my weight only during my quarterly doctor visits.

My first goal: run a 5K. I’ve walked plenty of 5K races to raise money and awareness for causes such as lupus, breast cancer, and domestic violence. But I’ve never run a 5K race before. That will change on Oct. 15 when I take on the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure with some of the ladies from my Black Girls Run group. My goal is to finish the 3.1 mile run in 36 minutes (which may seem like a long time, but will be a challenge for me because I’m a turtle on the trail).

To prepare, I’m actually going to just begin training for my second goal, which is to walk/run a 10K. The training program I’m using recommends running Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays; doing strength training on Mondays and Thursdays, and doing some type of cross training on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Unfortunately, my busy schedule won’t allow me to spread out my runs that way. Instead my schedule will be something like this:

Sunday: run, yoga
Wednesday: Body Jam, strength training
Friday: run, strength training
Saturday: run, Spinning

I’ll update you all on my progress in the next few weeks.

Here are the ladies that keep me chasing pavements and chasing my dreams!

  4. Good for you!! I’m thinking of running a 5k in October as well. It’s for an AIDS org, can’t remember the official name. Anyway, good luck and HAVE FUN.

  5. Thanks so much for the encouragement, ladies! Nik, I hope you do the race and blog about it!
