Flashback Friday: OutKast and Love & Basketball soundtrack

It’s Friday, and you know Georgia Mae always celebrates with good music.

Here’s what Edward is listening to:

OutKast, Aquemini (1998)

Edd said: I’ve written countless album reviews on this blog, but I’ve never given an album a 5-star rating. It’s certainly not that I’m incapable of handing out that designation – but y’all know how picky I can be. But if Aquemini was released 10 years later, it unquestionably would have received my top honor. By 1998, Andre 3000 and Big Boi were already considered two of rap’s top lyricists, but when Aquemini dropped, it was no longer a consideration, it was fact. The duo stayed true to their Southern roots while experimenting with a new sound, creating the most forward-thinking album I had ever heard. This was the album that upgraded them from mere rappers to true innovators. Stankonia and Speakerboxxx/The Love Below later brought them mainstream success but Aquemini was a game-changer.

Love & Basketball soundtrack (2000)

Jai said: I love those moments when a beloved song comes on the radio that you haven’t heard in awhile and you’re so touched by the sound of it you refuse to get out of your car until it’s finished. I had such an experience last week when “Fool of Me” by Me’Shell NdegéOcello was played on the “old folks'” station. My favorite song from the Love & Basketball soundtrack, this heartbreaking ballad was one of many gems from that album. The soundtrack features rap classics like MC Lyte’s “Lyte as a Rock” and “It Takes Two” by Rob Base and DJ EZ Rock, as well as iconic R&B tracks like Al Green’s “Love and Happiness” and “Sweet Thing” by Rufus and Chaka Khan. A perfect blend of old and new school, the CD also boasts artists such as Bilal, Angie Stone, and Lucy Pearl.
