Updated: Female condom designed with “teeth” to catch rapists

South African Dr. Sonnet Ehlers has designed a female condom that she hopes will help authorities cut down on rape and help authorities catch sexual offenders. Ehlers is distributing the condom — called Rape-aXe — for free during the World Cup, in a country with one of the worst rape rates in the world.

A woman can insert the condom as she would a tampon. The condom has jagged teeth-like hooks inside that attach to a man’s penis during intercourse. Once it grabs hold, only a doctor can remove it, and if the man tries to remove the condom it will only clasp even tighter.

Ehlers said, however, that the device doesn’t break the skin and that there’s no danger of fluid exposure.

Critics suggest the condom puts women at risk of further violence from men trapped by the device, which honestly, was my first thought when I read about Rape-aXe.

Others say the the device is “medieval.” To that Ehlers had this to say: “Yes, my device may be a medieval, but it’s for a medieval deed that has been around for decades. I believe something’s got to be done… and this will make some men rethink before they assault a woman.”

  1. This goes way too far, playa. Subjecting rapists to a glorified bear trap is just as evil and brutal as the rape itself.

  2. Well, I disagree with that. If a man is raping a woman he deserves a bear trap on his penis! But I just wonder how effective these will be in stopping violence against women.

  3. That’s kind of my point. It won’t solve the problem, it’s just extending the circle of violence. Like the old ‘you shoot my dog, I kill your cat’ thing – no one wins.

  4. One thing a man doesn’t play about is his “johnson.” It is midevil BUT he shouldn’t be doing this in the first place. I dont think this will ever fly in the U.S but im assuming if this dr. is going to these extreme measures it MUST be a serious problem in that country. Maybe they will think twice…??? I personally think it will not work.

  5. I love the spirit and intent of this and see it as perfectly justified self defense. But like others, I worry about the potential for increased violence against women.

  6. I think that if it hurts, the guy won’t be thinking about slapping around the woman he’s raping. Like most bears, he’ll be screaming and trying to get that thing off his paw…

  7. so what if this thing malfunctions and bear trap them both. anyone think about that. LOL

  8. Any woman who uses one of these things.. isn’t going to just get raped, more than likely she’ll be murdered. Now if the woman were to inform the rapist before he plunges into her, maybe he’d think twice. Or maybe he’d just take her up the ass instead.
