Edd’s MANtra: Swagger Jackin’

It was only a matter of time.

Hip hop is seemingly built on jealousy. Just ask Eminem – on a track on his recently leaked new album Recovery, he talks about how he nearly wrote a diss song to trash Lil Wayne and Kanye West, simply because he was envious of their success.

Another artist who has enjoyed a ton of exposure (in more ways than one) recently is Nicki Minaj. Her Sailor Moon wigs and plastic pictorials have raised the ire of hip hop’s original Barbie doll, Lil Kim.

Kim ran her mouth during a recent concert with the human mattress Ray J. From hiphopdx.com:

Ray J took a moment to express his feelings on females in rap, primarily Nicki Minaj. “I’m seeing a lot of Lil Kim imposters,” Ray J stated. “I’m not saying no names, but you know who,” he continued, referencing biting Kim’s style after calling Kim the greatest female rapper ever. Lil Kim added, “We love her. We just want her to pay homage,” making an obvious reference to Minaj. “If you don’t pay homage then f*ck you,” she concluded.

I must add that this rant comes from two people performing a 10-year-old song that no one but me remembers. It didn’t stop there, as Kim saw fit to go after Nicki’s new business parnter – Kim’s old buddy Diddy. From rapradar:

Kim continued her anti-Nicki campaign at Sonar Nightclub in Baltimore last night and this time, she added her soon-to-be manager, Puff into the mix. Around the :27 mark of “It’s All About The Benjamins” performance, the Queen Bee says “Ay, Puffy should be ashamed of his f*ckin’ self!” Kim later brought out B-More’s Keys The Problem to spit her Nicki diss freestyle.

Nicki has mostly ignored Kim’s complaining, only slightly mentioning on her Twitter account about “jealous haters,” or something. Everyone’s favorite rapper Drake proclaimed that he “don’t give a f*ck what Lil Kim or nobody else is talkin about, you’re the baddest chick to ever do this sh*t!”

And since Drake said it, that means it’s true. If you were born in 1990, that is. For the rest of us, we know better.

I’ve always loved Kim and next to Missy Elliott, she’s my favorite female hip hop artist. Yeah, we all know that Biggie wrote her rhymes but so what? I wish Biggie was still around to write everyone’s rhymes. Maybe these new artists wouldn’t bore me so much. And Kim’s post-Biggie rhymes are light-years ahead of Nicki’s annoying, Tourette syndrome flow.

I’d wager that most of our readers prefer Kim over Nicki. Kim beat Nicki by a decent margin of votes a few months back in our Femcee Tournament. And it’s extremely apparent to even the most jaded Young Money fans that Nicki is shamelessly swiping Kim’s gimmick.

Having said all that, I think it’s absolutely stupid of Kim to even acknowledge Nicki. Sure, I understand that Kim doesn’t want people to forget that she was the first woman to degrade herself by dressing up like a blow-up doll, but picking on the new girl will win her no favors from young fans who only know Kim as the plastic lady from “Dancing With The Stars.”

To the young’n’s Kim just comes off as a bitter old lady. To us old heads, we’ll just shake our heads, knowing that although she’s right, she just comes off as desperately seeking attention.

If Kim wants to retain her crown, the best thing she can do is release music that totally blows away Nicki’s stuff. And if Nicki keeps releasing garbage like this, that won’t be too hard.

Do you think Lil Kim has a right to confront Nicki Minaj for stealing her style?
