A U.S. destroyer is keeping watch today over the waters where Somali pirates held the American captain of a hijacked cargo ship that was later retaken by the crew in an hours-long, high seas drama. The pirates took Capt. Richard Phillips as a hostage as they escaped into a lifeboat Wednesday in the first such attack on American sailors in 200 years. FOX News

President Obama plans to begin addressing the country’s immigration system this year, including looking for a plan to make legal status possible for an estimated 12 million illegal immigrants. Latino voters turned out strongly for Mr. Obama in the election. NY Times

Ten priests from the order that founded the University of Notre Dame say the school risks its “true soul” and could distance itself from the Roman Catholic church by inviting President Obama to campus next month. The members of the Congregation of the Holy Cross, which helps run the university, asked the Rev. John Jenkins, the Holy Cross priest who is Notre Dame’s president, and the university’s board of fellows to reconsider the invitation to Mr. Obama because he supports abortion rights and stem cell research. Notre Dame announced last month that Mr. Obama would deliver the university’s May 17 commencement address and receive an honorary degree. CBS News
