A powerful earthquake in mountainous central Italy knocked down whole blocks of buildings early Monday, killing at least 50 people and trapping many more. Thousands have been left homeless. The earthquake’s epicenter was about 70 miles northeast of Rome near the medieval city of L’Aquila. The U.S. Geological Survey said Monday’s quake was magnitude 6.3, but Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics put it at 5.8. ABC News

North Korea’s rocket may have fallen into the sea, but military experts caution against calling it a complete failure, noting that it traveled twice as far as any missile the country has launched. The distance was still far short of showing North Korea could reach U.S. territory, yet it rattled the North’s neighbors and countries around the globe, with the U.S. and its allies pushing for quick punishment at an emergency U.N. Security Council meeting held hours after liftoff. “This was not a silly stunt,” U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice told CBS’ Early Show. “We feel it’s important to get the message across to North Korea that it can’t act with impunity and indeed it needs to come back to the table.” CBS News

President Barack Obama promised tighter ties with Turkey during a joint press conference with the Muslim country’s leader. Obama is reaching out to Turkey to help him wind down the Iraq war and bring stability to the Middle East. He is also counting on Turkey, the only Muslim member of NATO, to remain a steadfast ally in the Afghanistan conflict. Obama’s visit is being closely watched by an Islamic world that harbored deep distrust of George W. Bush. In his inaugural address in January, Obama pledged to reach out to the Muslim world. A father who shot and killed his five children in their Washington state home before killing himself had argued with his wife over another man before the shootings. Authorities found the children, ages 7 to 16, dead in their Pierce County home Saturday afternoon, and the father, James Harrison, was found dead inside his SUV in adjacent King County. Before the shooting Harrison and his 16-year-old daughter found Harrison’s wife with another man. CNN
