Suddenly Susan

Unless you’ve stranded on The Island with the Oceanic 6 (shout out to my LOST fans) I’m sure you’ve heard of Susan Boyle, the 47-year-old woman who become an overnight celebrity after wowing the crowd at Britain’s Got Talent.
Some call her an unassuming diva. The unmarried, “never been kissed” woman took the stage with her frumpy dress, frizzy hair and amazing confidence before a crowd of people who were snickering and whispering about the way she looked. Then she shut them all up as she sang her heart out giving a beautiful and powerful rendition of “I Dreamed a Dream” that brought the audience to their feet and some to tears.
The media has run wild with the story saying it’s just what we need at a time like this when the global economic downturn has everyone feeling blue.
I hate to be a Debbie Downer, but there’s something about this story that just doesn’t sit well with me.

Why is the world so shocked that Boyle has such an amazing voice? Why would we assume that someone isn’t talented simply because she’s not young and glamorous?

And Dennis Palumbo brought up another question over at The Huffington Post: What if Susan Boyle couldn’t sing? Then would it have been okay that the audience laughed at her when she took the stage?
Just something to think about.

  1. i am guilty. even when she started signing, i thought, is she lip syncing? but in response to edd’s article too…susan boyle hasn’t exactly “made it” in mainstream music. she just got her 5 minutes.–ljm

  2. well this is my first time seeing it this although i heard someone mention it. i just didn’t care to be honest. i dont get what the big deal is.

  3. okay – i didn’t get the big deal either and didn’t really care for her singing…but i didn’t want to be a debbie downer either!
