A protest over the fatal shooting by a BART police officer of an unarmed black man mushroomed into several hours of violence Wednesday night as demonstrators smashed storefronts and cars, set several cars ablaze and blocked streets in downtown Oakland. The protesters are crying out against society’s racial injustice, yet many of businesses targeted are owned by people of color. (WTF? More on this later.) San Francisco Chronicle

Israel continued its offensive in Gaza on Friday, hitting more than 50 targets, despite the U.N. Security Council’s call for an immediate cease-fire. Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said Israel is disregarding the U.N. vote because the resolution will not be heeded by “murderous” Palestinian groups. CNN

On Jan. 14, Marvel Comics is releasing a special issue of Amazing Spider-Man #583 with President-elect Barack Obama, a self-professed Spidey fan, depicted on the cover. Inside are five pages of the two teaming up and even a fist-bump between Spidey and the new president. USA Today

  1. When will it click that riots in which people of color damage what belongs to other people of color makes absolutely no sense and will only cause them to be the subject of ridicule? There is still another young man dead. No doubt a slew of black people ended up in handcuffs. There is no advancement, no justice, only a bunch of justifiably angry people taking their anger out on themselves, which at the end of the day is pointless. When will folks learn from history?
