President-elect Barack Obama and congressional Democrats are crafting a plan to offer about $300 billion in tax cuts to individuals and businesses, a move aimed at attracting Republican support for an economic-stimulus package and prodding companies to create jobs.

New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson has withdrawn his nomination to be commerce secretary, citing the distraction of a federal investigation into ties to a company that has done business with his state. CNN

Malia and Sasha Obama begin classes today at their new school, Sidwell Friends School. Sasha, who is in the 2nd grade, will attend the lower school in suburban Maryland, while 5th grader Malia will go to the middle school a few miles away in northwest Washington. Actors John Travolta and Kelly Preston said in a statement Sunday they are “heartbroken” over last week’s death of their teenage son. Jett Travolta, 16, died Friday after a seizure while vacationing with his family in the Bahamas, an attorney for the family has said. The boy hit his head after the seizure, but the exact cause of death is not known. An autopsy will be performed today. CNN
